I'm scheduled to go to CHO this Thu afternoon (but long term weather doesn't look good for it). This will involve filing a flight following flight plan as well as ADIZ flight plan for out and back. I'm also taking JYO -> 2GV2 -> CHO out and CHO -> CSN VOR -> Purcellville -> JYO back so the flight following plans are different. I'm also going to make myself use the E-6B for computations on the way (the GPS will be a last resort).

bummer, canceled due to haze. i was looking forward to this and the new DC ADIZ procedures (http://www.faa.gov/airports_airtraffic/air_traffic/publications/notices/media/adiz.pdf)
went into effect today. ah well, someday, weather won't be an issue.
I flew from JYO (Leesburg) to CHO (Charlottesville) Mon afternoon. Because it was the end of a holiday weekend I had expected the airports and airspace to be busy but it wasn't at all. In fact, I had made a couple of plans for entering both downwinds at CHO at a 45 degree angle and I ended up just coming straight in to runway 21. There was a fair amount of haze so visibility wasn't great but I was able to see runway 21 about 5 miles out and the tower said to come on straight in. We used VOR navigation there (with GPS as a backup) and then used GPS for the return. The DC ADIZ (Air Defense Identification Zone) recently changed so leaving JYO is a bit easier but you still have to be careful to stay within the boundary established for egress/entry to it. When we reached CHO a 737 was waiting to depart and got to sit there and watch me on my long final in my bug smasher (which was kind of cool). I wish I had had time to take out my camera and take a picture of the approach but I thought I should actually just pay attention and fly the airplane (details, details). All in all a neat experience.
WAHOOWA!
